It’s summertime in Utah again. Summer is a time for activities like hiking, swimming or spending afternoons out in the park for outdoor time in the sun. With the beginning of Utah’s summer weather, pet owners need to get their pets ready for the hot weather months ahead.
Pet owners should use more than common sense when it comes to hot weather pet care. In the summer plans for various activities, pet owners might forget that their animals have specific summer care needs. In order to help pet owner’s stay on top of summer pet care, here is a list of tips that will help you take care of your pet:
- Do not leave your pet in a locked car for any period of time. In minutes your car reaches dangerous temperatures. Animals DO NOT sweat the same way that humans do to regulate their temperature.
- Dogs may experience heat stroke in the summer months. Keep an eye out for unexplained hyper excitement, excessive panting and heavy salivation. If you think your dog might have the symptoms of heat stroke, contact your vet as soon as possible.
- Make sure your pet is in an area with easy access to shade and water.
- Preventative medications can prevent serious health conditions caused by flea or heartworms. Be sure to visit your veterinarian for heartworm and flea medications.
- Avoid skin infections in matted fur by keeping your pet neatly groomed.
- If you notice that your pet has round, red spots that have a puss like appearance, visit your veterinarian. Your pet might be having an allergic reaction.
The warmth of the hot summer months can be enjoyed by you and your pet if you consider their summer pet care needs. Your pet can have fun this summer if you make sure you provide it with water, shade and the regular tender loving care you always give.
