Small dogs?

I have been thinking about a getting a small dog that could live in a medium size apartment in LA. I don’t know what breed i should get so suggestions will be helpful. Also, i heard that smaller dogs are more louder than bigger dogs. Is that true?

The dog has to be pretty small for the apartment rules. I am not sure about the weight limit we have.

Please no chihuahuas though…
Thanks for the help.
Heres some more info since people requested it.

I am a full time medical student so I don’t have a lot of free time on my hands.
But i will try to spend the most time I can with the dog.
I want to keep the hair to minumum and not dangeorously long.

Small dogs tend to be yappier, but not necessarily louder. Yappier can be much more annoying than loud, though.

What else are you looking for in a dog? How much brushing or grooming are you willing to do? How do you feel about shedding? How much exercise? Do you want to do other activities (obedience, earthdog, agility, etc.) with your dog? Do you want to get a dog from a breeder or shelter? (I ask because certain breeds I might suggest rarely come up in rescue.)

Here are some small breeds not known for being yappy:
    Boston Terrier
    Dachshund
    Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
    Border Terrier
    Norfolk Terrier
    Norwich Terrier
Jack Russell Terrier (probably not right for apartment living, but if you’re able to give them mounds of exercise and work, it’s a serious working dog in an apartment-weight-limit size)

Look in to the Japanese Chin. They are wonderful small dogs, and tend to be very quiet and laidback. I have 4 of them and they are just wonderful, not to mention, adorable. My dogs are so sweet, they go to work with me and greet people when they come in.

yorkies, maltese, poodles, bichons, and shih-tzus all are non shedding long haired dogs. small breeds do need to be socialized more, because they will dislike people if you keep them locked away until they are an adult. I personally like shih-tzus because they are sweet, less yappy, and non shedders, but if you get a yappy dog, they do make no bark collars for them.

Not all small dogs are loud dogs. Chihuahua’s and Min Pins are considered ‘yappy’ where as something like a Bichon or Shih Tzu cross, are generally very good lap dogs, dont need a whole lot of room and are pretty quiet!

I have a doxie & he’s a riot. They’re smart & good companions & aim to please. As far as the bark & size of the dog-I tend to think that the bigger the dog the louder the bark.I hope you ‘ll have time to spend with whatever companion you decide to get because alot of people work all the time & the animal is cooped inside all the time which wouldn’t be good.I trust you’ll make the right decision when the time comes.

I have a cocker spaniel. They stay in puppy stage FOREVER. Mine is almost 3 and still acts like a 2 month old puppy. I have found that dauchands are INCREDIBLY yappy (which I hate). I am currently looking for a Shih Tzu myself. They are small (my mom has one and is precious!) They are around 12 pounds and lovable. Another option might be a pug. They run around 15 lbs. Enjoy! I love dogs!

I think you should check out your apartment’s pet policy before you do anything. I am sure there is a hefty pet deposit & probably more rent each month. They will have a weight limit & walking rules. Do that BEFORE you get your heart set on a dog & then decide you can’t or don’t want to because of the increased money outlay. The standard weight rule is usually 30 pounds.

What a dog does when left alone depends on the dog’s personality more than the breed. ANY breed is going to be unhappy if you leave him alone for any long periods of time. If you can’t come home every few hours or get someone else to let him out, please don’t get a dog. It is so cruel to cage a dog for 8-10 hours a day. That is no life.

I have two Maltese dogs. I have stood outside before & listened to them. They carry on like crazy when I leave them. They bark & whine like they are in pain. They do it for about 3 minutes & they stop. JUST that quick, they stop.

In the past, we had teacup poodles, about 5 pounds. We had no problems in this area.

Bold and keen to work, the American Cocker Spaniel is equally suited to life as a gundog or as a household pet. Cheerful, sweet, and sensitive. The Cocker Spaniel is respectful of its master’s authority without much challenge. Merry and endearing. A happy tail-wagger. Gentle and trusting, with average intelligence. They are lively, playful and devoted. Usually good with children. Cockers love everyone and need people to be happy.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an eager, affectionate tail-wagger. Lively, outgoing and sportive. These fearless lively little dogs want to please. They are intelligent enough to understand what you want and therefore are usually easy to train and respond well to gentle obedience training. They are said to be naturally well behaved and get along well with other dogs and non-canine pets. Cavalier’s love people and need lots of companionship to be happy.

The Toy Poodle is sensitive and remarkably intelligent. Highly responsive, they are said to be one of the most trainable breeds. Pleasant, happy, perky and lively, they like to be with people. Demanding and delightful; very amusing and clever. It makes a very good watchdog for its size.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a hardy, highly intelligent, obedient, protective and devoted dog. Corgis are extremely active and devoted little dogs, and are usually good with considerate children. They make fine guards, and excellent show and obedience dogs.

i would suggest a pug as they are a pretty laid back breed, they are content to be your best friend, give out lots of love in return, sleep alot, make prefect apt. dogs. they only real draw back is they shed unless they brushed alot.
I had my last one for 17 yrs. when they get fixed just be sure to not over feed them because their weight becomes a issue, not to much human food. I’ve had many breeds over the last 32 yrs and I believe pug was my favorite, very loving, would sit in my lap for hrs watching T.V, loved to travel, and yet would sleep and the couch all day till I came home, not much of a barker either.

  14. Pug Luva Says:

well pugs are great 4 apartments and they get to be about 20 lbs…but dont forget that they shed a lot oh and they dont bark a lot at all. dachshunds are supposed to do well in apartments and the standard ones get to be bout 20 lbs(toys:8lbs, minis:9lbs). theres many more so if u dont lyk my suggestions i suggest u go on google and search small dogs they give u tons of options…hope that helped!

  15. nursekuba Says:

Pugs are pretty small but they are usually quiet. Even when they bark it’s not very loud, usually.

Before you decide to get a dog I would want to make sure that you know the weight limit and if you are even allowed to have a dog.
If you are allowed, you have to decide, shedding or not, long or short coat, minimal grooming or a lot of grooming, high energy or laid back personality, exercise needs..
Read a few books and do some research online about different breeds.

more than the breed of dog, I worry that you say you don’t have much time.

Truly, rethink this. It may be best you postpone getting a dog. It is hard, as dogs are such marvelous companions. But as companions, they should have plenty of companionship…they are totally reliant upon you
