Recently my wife and I found a plan for creating a dog waste compost system. We have two 60 pound dogs that generate a lot of waste and we began to wonder if there was a way to compost their waste instead of throw it into the garbage. American dogs and cats generate 10 million tons of waste every year, most of which is thrown into the trash and then winds up in landfills and never actually decomposes. i had neighbors from HELL. well actually Norway. they threw hippie drum circle parties. yes, DRUM CIRCLE parties (at least 10-12 drums inside an apartment). they would do this a LOT. my solution was to buy an Earthquake subwoofer (look it up), and i cranked Merzbow at max volume and spent the night at my friends house. left the sub running full blast for 16 hours. LOL. best $1200 i EVER spent.

This is awesome. I recommend reading The Humanure Handbook, though. If your compost pile gets thermophilic (hot) you should be able to compost your dog waste in there.

I was wondering what the long term maintenance was on this? Do you end up just relocating the container when it is full? Do you make a second one and alternate them? I know that you aren’t supposed to use dog or cat waste as a source of garden compost (food for people) but is it ok for ornamentals and then how long do you wait to use it? I work in a veterinary clinic/boarding facility and we end up with a lot of of “Doggy Waste”! Thanks for any answers

Does anyone know if this sort of system would work in colder climates? I’m not talking Arctic, but maybe Northern Alberta? Would the cold weather prevent the waste from biodegrading at all?

@lowcarbonhome I’m going to build on for my dogs but i read that water needs to pass throug also and you need a preforated overflow pipe about 10ft long with 12inches of gravel below that for the water to escape.

The grocery bags you said don’t break down actually do within a few months of exposure to the elements. I was prepping a yard sale and found this out first hand. I stored some plastic bags in our carport and within a few weeks the bags were falling apart…so thank you for your video – I have 2 chihuahuas and their waste is minimal but plan to continue composting. i feed my dawg raw. their poop turns chalky in 3 days and disapeers in the first rain, so i just leave it. guess if you dont have a decent sized yard this is the way to go.

Hi – thanks for posting this. Based on your video I created my own Dog Waste Composter and so far it has been really great. It does not smell when I open the lid and it is a great way to manage my puppies poop. I do have a question about decomposition – I am seeing that the older poop is turning white which is a good sign – however am I supposed to add any water – or do I just leave it be. Thanks a lot for posting this video – it helped me out a lot.

You’re probably ok, then. What I might suggest is using coffee grounds instead of other coarse material, it won’t fill up as fast and the grounds will combat the odor a bit more as well as help introduce nitrogen to help break it down faster.

It is actually next to the garage and about 50 feet from the house. Can you say more about about the kind of leachants you are refering to? It is very clay soil and I am told not much leaching takes place in that kind of soil. So far it has worked rather well except that it filled faster than I hoped with two dogs.

since leachants are possible, it is advised not to site the trashcan near the foundation of your house as it appears in this video.

composting is great.. for those of us living in apt, I use flushable dog poop bags and let sewer system takes care of dog waste.
