Tutorial coming soon… Using clicker training, and without using positive punishment, you can teach dogs reliable complex behaviors like teaching a default “don’t take a step off the grassy area unless released”. Splash is demoing how she generalizes don’t step off the grass in two locations where I have never trained her to do it. I only trained her in front of my house, and another location, but as you can see she generalized it to the canyon area near the park because it doesnt have ‘grass’ (or at least that is what I think). The day that I film this I actually WANTED her to go and get the frisbee for me when I did a crappy throw, but she would not leave the grass, and I had to go and walk my lazy self down there in the bushes to get the frisbee. I was very impressed with her generalization skills so I picked up the camera and filmed a “fake” bad throw. However, with most dogs you would have to go to a few locations to train, before they would generalize it to all locations.

Dogs are used to protect sheep and other livestock from the cheetahs in Africa – thereby saving the big cats from potential shootings by aggrieved farmers.

Please give us the tutorial soon! That was a great video :) This is one of the tricks that I think would be so important to teach every dog to master. It would be great to have a dog that stays in the garden reliably. How do you know how and from which part of the behavioural chain to start training these kind of behaviours? Thank you!
October 7th, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Puh-leeeeease hurry with the tutorial, this is wonderful. In fact, Emily, I know you could use the money so I’d like to suggest you open a paypal account, and invite folks who want the tutorial to buy it from you for what we’d pay for a Starbucks coffee, about $3.00. You can email it to them once they’ve paid you. You’ve given so much of your expertise for free, you absolutely deserve to be compensated so sometimes you should charge. We adore you and want you to be sustained in this work.

@billnullfire
No doubt. I’m pretty sure Earth will kill a lot of us off. It will be nice to have a kind of fresh start after that. Assuming the idiots all die.
October 8th, 2010 at 1:44 am
Such handsome dogs. Look at those legs! What a clever idea to employ them.
October 8th, 2010 at 2:41 am
@billnullfire I totally have to agree! Why can’t the farmers just move somewhere else? Animals are precious! There’s other places farmers can live! There’s way much more humans than animals! Save the animals! Don’t kill them!!!
October 8th, 2010 at 2:54 am

October 8th, 2010 at 3:53 am

October 8th, 2010 at 4:15 am
@billnullfire I totally agree and it infuriates me that we are to bloody selfish to consider anyone else other than ourselfs well can you blame us when we have unresponsible, greedy, non loyal non honour or non morale leaders who should NOT be leaders in the 1st bloody place
October 8th, 2010 at 4:24 am
@billnullfire Alright then. you do have a point. So, why dont we start with you? heheh!
October 8th, 2010 at 5:04 am

October 8th, 2010 at 5:49 am
@billnullfire totally agree, i truly believe that as a specie we lost the right to keep reproducing long time ago, so, i hope we destroy enough to make us desappear soon. everytime a woman says she wants to have a baby, with a big stupid smile on her face, meanwhile is buying an animal tested lipstick, i wanna slap her in the face, and i´m a girl too. sorry for my english
October 8th, 2010 at 5:56 am
this animals are so beautiful .i´m crying..
October 8th, 2010 at 6:10 am
@billnullfire I agree, humans are idiots compared to animals, I mean since man walked the earth we have gone to war, and everything else you mention. But going to war should only be used as a defence against invaders and it never fails to amaze me that those who do invade anothers country for self gain have the loyalty of their armies to carry out this criminal act…
October 8th, 2010 at 6:54 am
this is pretty awesome. The lady who started this program is awesome. I love how we can create these positive solutions that provide multiple benefits at the same time without hurting anyone!
October 8th, 2010 at 7:31 am
@billnullfire and the worst of us reproduce too… it is always the idiots that get into unplanned pregancies.
October 8th, 2010 at 7:50 am
@billnullfire Well, it seems YOU qualify as a major A-Hole with that attitude..I suppose YOU should be spared but others eradicated? Sounds just like Hitler and the Eugenics program he implemented to kill off ‘undesirables’–wow, amazing!!
October 8th, 2010 at 8:26 am
@billnullfire yes it does, yet,i dont worry, i dont think we can leave a permanent mark here no matter how hard we try,
the earth will outlast us, no problem.
October 8th, 2010 at 9:19 am
Very intelligent solution to a delicate problem. Good job.
October 8th, 2010 at 9:47 am

October 8th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
@billnullfire & CavalerVlah Would you two shut up? God.
October 8th, 2010 at 1:10 pm
wonderful and friendly solution… mans best friend ; )….. these are the kind of situations that motivates me to study more about the environment and animals so that I can be out their and HELP!… It is understandable why the farmers had to kill the cheetahs because this is their source of income and only way to take care of their family. But with the wonderful dogs by their side every problem is solved and no one gets hurt.
