German Shepherds are a very devoted, intelligent and highly active breed of dogs that are brought up as household pets.

They are not like any of the other well known breeds of dogs.

One must be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time training a German Shepherd because it has to be given a lot of exercise and attention. You will be able to train your German Shepherd without much trouble if you are aware of its behavior characteristics.

What you should remember, and this is important, is that German Shepherds are relatives of the dogs in the wild. They resemble them and the wolves in several respects.

It should be noted that the German Shepherds continue to follow the pattern seen in the wild packs in that they seem to believe in having an Alpha dog. In the wild, the Alpha dog is the leader of the pack. There is also a Beta dog which is second only to the Alpha in the line of leadership of the group.

To train your dog successfully, you must capitalize on the German Shepherd’s instinct to follow an Alpha dog. If you convince him that you are the Alpha dog you can easily get him to obey your instructions.

The remarkable thing about German Shepherds that you must always remember is that they never give up on trying to do their best.

Once you have got your dog to believe that you are the leader, he will always try to find how strong a leader you are by attempting to become the next in command.

Your dog will refuse to follow your instructions or make you punish them in an effort to take over from you the position of Alpha dog. You must never give in to temper or show signs of displeasure when they do this. All you have to do to check this is to show them their position in a matter of fact way.

Your dog will pay attention to your commands only after you have convinced him that you are, in fact, the undisputed Alpha dog who has to be obeyed without question.

In the end, after accepting you to be the Alpha Dog, your German Shepherd will try to be the Beta Dog of the pack.

German Shepherds will try to dominate other dogs in the house, if you happen to have them. You should be on the look out for such behavior of your German Shepherd.

The desire to dominate is instinctive for a German Shepherd but this will not go well with your other dogs.

In view of this, it would be better that you do not have, in addition to the German Shepherd ,other breeds of dogs in your house that are similar to the German Shepherd in ferocity. This will only create a lot of unpleasant strife for dominance among them
