I know many of you have heard the chant or adoption saying, Don’t Buy While Shelter Animals die. To me this doesn’t exclude purebred dogs, is this saying a way of stopping potential purebred dog buyers from buying from reputable breeders and persuading buying from a shelter? Is it wrong or is it against good morals to buy a dog when you know that millions of shelter animals are dying.?

I have no idea about the thoughts of the person behind this…………
…………….however there will have to be a complete change of thinking if people didn’t buy pure bred dogs….no kennel club registrations, no showing dogs..some shelters are big business now such as the Dogs Trust in the Uk is part of the charity arm of the kennel Club………….enabling them to get tax back, promote themselves and raise lots of public funds

Well, my opinion is this: While there are animals in shelters that are good and perfectly healthy, some are stricken with fatal illnesses. Also, some have serious behavioral issues. I’ve adopted lots of dogs from animal shelters only to be left in sadness because it either ended up having cancer, epilepsy or something else. I’ve also volunteered at shelters and seen first hand what goes on. Most owners find out the animal has a disease or disorder but no money to treat it. So they drop the animal off at the shelter claiming they’re moving and cant take the animal with them. And it goes undiagnosed because they dont have the veterinary care to find out of the animal is healthy or not. Then you adopt it and its either half dead because of cancer or its been abused and is scared of you. This is why I wont adopt from a shelter. However, I’m sure there are good dogs that need homes. I’ve just never found one.

IMO the slogan excludes breeders of any kind (reputable or otherwise), since it refers to “shelter animals”.
It would not exclude purebreds, since many purebreds are found in shelters and breed rescues.
I see where someone gets a dog as a matter of personal choice.
In the case of people who buy from BYBs and petstores, it is a foolish choice, but a personal choice nonetheless. :o)

I’ve seen this slogan many times on the PETA website. I think it goes for all dogs.
I think the message is so not buy *any* dog, even a dog bred for a purpose. I find this ridiculous as If I wanted the best sled dog possible, I would go to a *reputable* breeder. And Its my *choice* on whether I want to buy or adopt.
