Does anyone know if Akitas are “cuddley dogs”? Because i love everything about them just i want a dog that would active during the day, but loves to snuggle at night!
@rexcruger
no. the shiba is the much smaller cousin of the akita. both are very loyal, VERY intelligent hunting and working breeds from Japan. and NEITHER are good for inexperienced owners. if you must have one of teh two, but aren’t very experienced, I would recommend teh shiba over the akita. shibas are runners, and you’ll need a fenced yard and plenty of walks. both breeds need to be socialized to kids and other dogs early, or else they can be very “snappy”
akitas are awsome. we used to have one and she was the best dog i’ve known, a complete gentle giant, very sweet, and never tried to bite anyone, even when they were strangers and started pulling her hair and try to ride her like a pony.. she loved to have other dogs over and wouldn’t care that they ate her food. i know they have a bad reputation, but after our akita i can’t say that i agree
I was considering adopting one from a local kill shelter, but since they would already be fully grown I would be concerned about taking him around others. Is this a legitimate concern? Would they have hostile feelings towards me because I was not the original owner? Also, what can I do to make sure he is able to be around other dogs off his leash?
I have a 1yr old pinto Akita and he is great w/other animals and ppl. Never been aggressive towards anyone or anything…well, except maybe squirrels.lol. But no my Akta is a gentle giant.
I wish they would take the time to make clear that there are two different types of akitas…I much prefer the ACTUAL Japanese Akita, though I love them both, I’m most attracted to the more slimmed features of the Japanese one though.
No mention of the difference between the Original Akita Inu from Japan and the mixed version which was bred with a German Shepard which is now know as the American Akita. This is what makes up 98% of all Akitas in North America.

Akitas get along fine with other animals if you train them well.

akitas are strong and proud of being your pet if trained at early age. That’s why an akita as my future dog.
