Shelties are the best in my opinion with children & strangers. Mini eskimos are good too. The poms & yorkies are hyper & will bark & nip alot at first. But you should consider how much of a yard you have etc. b4 getting any dog. Shelties have the most even temprament though.

small dogs are usually a little bit nippy around small children so any of these dogs will need to be taught early on that biting (mouthing) is not a good thing
if i was to pick i’d get the sheltie they are great dogs

None of those…get a German Shepherd. They are wonderful dogs to have with kids in the house. They take a beating and are fiercefully loyal and protective.

“Toy” dogs are becoming more popular all the time. These little dogs, the result of generations of selective breeding, are generally bred as companion animals and people just seem to love them. Their miniature size and playful nature (most toy breeds are good natured dogs with a few exceptions) make them wonderful companions and for several years they have been chic among well to do people.
Most of the toy dog breeds hail originally from Asia where the process of selectively breeding dogs to make them smaller is believed to have begun, but there are plenty of toy breeds from other areas of the world as well.
Bichon Frise:
A small dog that was originally bred as a companion dog, the Bichon Frise possesses a boisterous personality, is very tolerant of children, other animals and strangers, and is highly intelligent and very trainable. These dogs have a short and curly white coat that does require frequent grooming.
Chihuahua:
The Chihuahua may be the best known of the toy dog breeds. They have a short or medium coat, are easy to groom, and possess average intelligence and trainability. They do not have the best personalities and are not tolerant of children, other animals, or strangers. The Chihuahua hails from Mexico originally and is the smallest of the toy dog breeds.
Maltese:
The Maltese is a companion dog that was originally bred for royalty or the very wealthy. They are natural born troublemakers, but are very loyal to their owners. They are not at all good with children, other animals, or strangers. They’re considered to be dogs of average intelligence and trainability. Their beautiful coats require frequent grooming.
Pekingese:
The Pekingese was originally bred for the Emperors of China. These little dogs have a boisterous personality and are not very tolerant of children or other animals. They do bark a lot and are often difficult to train. Wary of strangers they can make a good watchdog and will bark loudly when strangers approach their home.
Pug:
The Pug comes from East Asia. Their short coat requires little grooming, but the folds and wrinkles of their faces must be cleaned often. Pugs make wonderful family dogs because they are very docile, don’t bark a lot, and are good with children and other animals. They are highly intelligent dogs and very social.

for kids? i`d say a shih tzu, a maltese or a pom…but shih tzus tend to be more lovable, they`re very sweet and cuddly and they rarely lose their tempers..

Read up on these breeds- do some research first and find out which breed is best for you. IMO I would go with the Yorkie- Shelties are great dogs, but you are going to have to work with them a lot, keeping their minds stimulated, they are herding dogs, so they are very smart. Not just couch potatoes. Poms are cute too, and might suit your needs as well.

I think all of those are pretty barky, except the Sheltie, but those are bigger.
I got the perfect breed when i got a dog– a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel! They are the cutest, and friendly, and bred to be nice to everyone.
MIne is the perfect pet, and never bites. She is so sweet, and very friendly!! It is an awesome and loyal friend too!!(and they stay kinda small)

American Eskimo dogs are wonderful!! I own 3 of them. They are loving, loyal, smart and very family orientated. But they are not for everyone. They can be a bit dominant at times and owners need to show that they are Alpha at all times. They need proper training and socialization. They are very leary of strangers, but most warm up to them after a few minutes. Eskies come in 3 sizes: Toy – 9 to 12 inches, Mini – 12 to 15 inches and Standard – 15 to 19 inches. They are very smart and very eager to please their owners. They make great watch dogs and they are very protective of their family and surroundings.

I think Beagles are very loving and friendly. They are pack dogs, and love to cuddle. They come in 13 inch and 15 inch heights. There are also pocket beagles, but they are really just abnormally small beagles.

Please consider adopting a dog from a shelter. You can go visit them and see which is best for you. There are many dogs that need to be saved and generally they make wonderful companions, as if they know you gave them a second chance.
I would never buy a dog, I would always adopt.
