Whether you are a ‘cat person’ or a ‘dog person’, chances are you are really an animal lover. There is something in our human nature that seeks out the close friendship and companionship of a little fuzzy creature to grant us unconditional love and affection. This quest for friendship may eventually lead you to someone like Carrie Herst.
Dogs will always maintain a certain magical power of our psyche. Pomeranians in particular are the ultimate companions. They truly personify “man’s best friend” for a reason. They follow their owners everywhere we go, are completely dependent upon them, and can always make them feel better, just by being around them.
Their name comes from a region in northwest Germany, called Pomerania. The Pomeranian breed originally descended from the German spitz dog variety. They were initially bred as a much larger species, but the breed evolved into a much smaller version during the reign of England’s Queen Victoria. She was widely known as Pomeranian enthusiast.
Today’s Pomeranian breeds are very small dogs, sometimes called Poms or Pom Poms. The dogs typically weigh between 4 and 8 pounds and are usually shorter than one foot in height. This small size classifies them as the ‘toy’ or ‘tea-cup’ variety of dog.
The original colors of Poms were full white or black. But today you can find these dogs in virtually any color imaginable. There are also many different types of color combinations and distinct patched patterns. Their hair consists of two different coats. There is a longer and course coat and a short and soft undercoat. Because of the propensity for shedding, this double-layered coat can easily develop knots and tangles.
Poms generally have extremely friendly and active dispositions and create tight and lasting bonds with their owners. They can also be highly defensive, which is typically manifested by their high-pitched bark.
Pomeranians are also known for their intelligences. This means that they typically respond well to obedience training. They do not usually have many serious health-related complications and can live to ages between 12 and 17 years old. When choosing a miniature-sized dog, the Pomeranian presents itself as one of the best options available.
