Picking the perfect name for your pet is a daunting task. You—and your pet—will have to live with the name you select for its entire life, which can be decades. You’ll call the pet’s name out dozens of times a day, both in your home and out in public. You will also refer to the pet by name to others, so take this into consideration when choosing a name.
Pick a name that the pet can easily recognize. Avoid a name that sounds like a command that you might give to your pet. For example, “Pitt” sounds a lot like “sit,” which would only confuse your dog if you told it to sit.
Don’t give your pet a name that sounds like the name of another animal or person in the household, which also confuses a pet. Animals respond better to one or two syllable names, so keep your name short.
Pick a name that’s easy to call out and one that you are happy to call out. You don’t want to name your dog “Loser” and have to shout its name across a park. Try to stay away from profane words or other terms you might feel embarrassed about using in public.
Make sure you know your pet’s gender before you give it a name. “Oscar” may actually be a girl, and if your pet is a puppy or kitten, you may not know its gender for a few weeks.
Consider the pet’s primary owners. If the pet is yours alone, feel free to name it whatever you like. However, if the pet will be a family pet, involve each family member in the naming process, especially children. This might yield a pet name like Peanut, Popsicle or Socks, but your family members and the pet will respond much more happily to a heartfelt name.

What about Gordon? I think that’s a cool dog name.

my faves for this website are…
Bullwinkle
Chew-Chew
DiMaggio: If you’re a baseball fan and love the Yankees, or have noticed how skillful your pooch is with a ball, this might be a good choice for a name.
Dust mop: I can see this name on a long haired dog or one that chases around your vacuum when you’re cleaning. He is after all, only trying to help.
Gilligan: He’s everybody’s “Little Buddy”.
Hillbilly: A good name for a dog who’s lineage is in question.
I only went 1 third of the way but really you should cheek it out!
